Service Learning

Service Learning

Serving our Community

Serving our community by helping others is an important part of Westfield’s focus.  Service-learning combines meaningful community service with academic study and practical application to enrich student learning, build civic engagement, and strengthen communities.

The very concept of service-learning relates directly to one of our school’s Core Beliefs: “We believe that embracing community service, compassion for others and the development of leaders provides students the foundation to have a vital role in the future of their world.”

Westfield students provide gifts to children at Christmas through KidsGive and provide food to those in need in our community.  Students tutor other students and read to kindergarten classes.  Students host blood drives, assemble “blessing bags,” provide assistance for community organizations, and visit nursing homes. Middle School students and faculty join together for a canned food drive to provide food to area community food banks.

The senior class participates in the Westfield Senior Experience (WSE), a week that includes both career-oriented exposure and service-learning exposure. Students “shadowed” in area businesses and organizations.  Through WSE, seniors have the opportunity to observe and experience professionals in various careers.
